Strategic Art Curation for a Holistic Impact: The CareOregon Art Program

How Kali Grey Art Consulting Built a Mission-Driven, Community-Centered Arts Framework for a Nonprofit Healthcare Leader

At Kali Grey Art Consulting, we believe that art has the power to connect, heal, and tell stories that matter. When CareOregon—an Oregon-based nonprofit health insurance provider—approached us to help envision an art program rooted in their mission and values, we knew this project had the potential to do more than transform spaces. It could deepen relationships, inspire well-being, and reflect the lived experiences of the communities they serve.

CareOregon puts the care in healthcare, supporting low-income Oregonians not just through insurance coverage, but through programs that address housing, job training, and community wellness. Their holistic approach to health care places culture and creativity as staples of healing. Our role was to translate that philosophy into a comprehensive art strategy—one that brings visual storytelling, inclusion, and intentional design into the heart of their physical spaces and community outreach.

We collaborated with their internal team to build a cohesive and strategic art program guided by clear goals, values, and a long-term vision. The goal was to create a program that could do more than decorate a space—it needed to connect, heal, and inspire. This meant establishing a framework that would not only guide the curation of art across three major CareOregon buildings but also encourage long-term engagement and sustainability. The result is an art program that bridges institutional efforts and community voices, building on existing partnerships while creating new opportunities for collaboration across the state. Every element—from artist selection to artwork placement—is aligned with their mission to make healthcare work for absolutely everyone.

The CareOregon Art Program is rooted in five key pillars of holistic health: physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental well-being. First, the artwork is curated to reflect these multidimensional well-being pillars. Second, the program prioritizes inclusivity and diversity, highlighting artists from a wide range of backgrounds, ethnicities, and lived experiences. This ensures that the collection reflects Oregon’s rich cultural landscape and invites all who engage with the artwork to feel seen and valued. Lastly, through commissioned art collections, workshops, events, and interactive community art projects, the program fosters therapeutic engagement and emotional connection.

Here at Kali Grey Art Consulting, we developed a communication and engagement plan that allows the program to grow, educate, and inspire over time. This includes artist-led events, internal and public education about the program, and a sustainability model that ensures the program remains a living, evolving expression of CareOregon’s values. The result is a dynamic, community-centered art experience that turns CareOregon’s facilities into spaces of reflection, empowerment, and care.

The CareOregon Art Program is an example of how art can serve as a form of care. By integrating creativity, inclusivity, and community voice into healthcare spaces, the program deepens CareOregon’s connection to the people it serves.

At Kali Grey Art Consulting, we’re honored to lead projects like this—ones that embrace the power of art to change spaces and lives. If your organization is ready to develop an intentional, values-driven art program that connects people and place, we’d love to collaborate.
